Sheikh Hasina

Historical context

Daughter of Bangabandhu, she grew up in a household at the centre of Bengali nationalism and survived the tragedy of 15 August 1975 while abroad.

Elected Awami League president in 1981 during exile, she rebuilt party organisation and campaigned for the restoration of democracy.

Led the movement against autocratic rule in the 1990s and returned the party to government in 1996, then again from 2009 with successive mandates.

Her governments prioritised infrastructure, poverty reduction, women's advancement, and flagship projects such as the Padma Bridge and Digital Bangladesh.

We are the descendants of those who never bowed their heads not to colonisers, not to dictators, not to despair.
