17 March 1920 15 August 1975 · Tungipara, Gopalganj
From the language movement to the Liberation War and the framing of a republic Bangabandhu gave Bengalis a political language for dignity, autonomy, and nationhood.

Historical context
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman entered public life as a student organiser in the 1940s, shaped by the struggle for Bengali language rights and provincial autonomy within Pakistan.
As general secretary and later leader of the Awami League, he turned mass politics into a disciplined electoral force culminating in the 1970 landslide that Pakistan's establishment refused to honour.
The 7 March 1971 address at the Race Course mobilised the nation; after his arrest, the provisional government carried the war forward until independence in December 1971.
Returning in January 1972, he led reconstruction, the first constitution, and non-aligned foreign policy before his assassination on 15 August 1975.
“This time the struggle is for our freedom. This time the struggle is for our independence.”
